The Clanton City Council will consider making a portion of 15th Street in the West End community a one-way street during its April 26 meeting.

Making the change, along with adding stop signs at the intersection of 14th and Fourth Avenue South and adding speed bumps on Park Drive to help deter speeding, was discussed during a work session on April 22.

Decreasing the speed limit to 15 miles per hour on 14th and 15th streets near the Housing Authority because of cars needing to park in the area was also discussed.

Equipment needs will also be considered at the April 26 voting session.

A vehicle for the police department to replace one that had been totaled when a tree fell on it, and new air packs for the Clanton Fire Department were discussed at the work session.

Mayor Jeff Mims said the city had received the insurance money for the vehicle, and there were additional funds in the budget to cover the difference between what the insurance paid and the cost of a new vehicle.

Fire Chief David Driver said the department is required to have 28 air packs to be ISO compliant. The department has an additional four air packs that it uses on its hazmat trailer. Replacing all 32 packs was expected to cost $233,200.

“I know that is a pretty steep number,” Driver said. “What I had talked to the mayor about is possibly going ahead and replacing 20 of them. By getting 20 of them, that will give us four per pumping apparatus. We’ve got four engines and a ladder truck.”

The department also wants to purchase a rapid intervention kit for $4,200.

Driver said purchasing the 20 air packs and the rapid intervention kit would cost $150,200 purchased off of the national bid list.

He said the newest air packs the department has were purchased in 2015 and do not meet the current standards.

Purchasing a track hoe for the water department and a road bore machine was also discussed.

Selecting a Mayor Pro-Tem, who would become mayor if something happened to Mims is expected to be voted on at the next meeting.
