No-hitters and perfect games are a rarity in the games of baseball and softball. That is what makes them so special.

Yet, this year there have been quite a few. It has been a treat to witness.

I was able to see my first of the season on March 11 when CCHS ace Pico Kohn threw a no-hitter against Thorsby High School. Kohn was dominant in the game, striking out 15 batters while walking just two Thorsby hitters in seven innings pitched.

However, he wasn’t the only CCHS pitcher to accomplish the feat of a no-hitter that week.

Just six days earlier, Mallie Harrison of the CCHS softball team threw a no-hitter against Horseshoe Bend High School in a 12-0 win for the Lady Tigers. She also walked only two hitters in the game.

Naturally, I figured there probably wouldn’t be many, if any more, as no-hitters don’t come around very often.

But just a couple of weeks later, another one came along via Billingsley pitcher Shane Shirah.

Shirah threw the no-hitter in a five-inning win over Loachapoka High School on March 24. He nearly threw a perfect game, but a single fielding error gave Loachapoka their only base runner in the contest. However, the no-hitter stood in a 12-0 win for the Bears.

Then, just this past week, the first perfect game of the season was tossed by Maplesville High School pitcher Jackson Abbott.

Abbott threw the perfect game in five innings while striking out 11 of the 15 batters he faced in a 14-0 win over Billingsley on April 6. It was a remarkable effort from Abbott.

All of the performances this season have been a spectacle to watch. These kinds of games don’t come around often, so getting to see four different pitchers accomplish such games has been truly remarkable.

But with games still left to be played, there is hope that these performances won’t be the last of their kind this season.

And if there are more to come, I, for one, can’t wait to see them.
