CES celebrates Youth Art Month

Clanton Elementary School is celebrating Youth Art Month in March with a special display. It was inspired by the storybook illustrations, “In the Tall, Tall Grass” by Denise Fleming. Students created a tempera painting of animals, insects, or objects that can be found in the grass. The display was mounted with brass fasteners on large grass-printed backgrounds donated by Lela Allred from Sears in Clanton. The total display has 46 panels that are 47 x 29 inches each. Artwork from 800+ students is hanging in the halls of the school and will be up through May 2021.
This project began the weeks right before the school closing on March 13, 2020. The students had already begun mounting their own work and preparing for a spring art show. “I wanted to finish what we had started and then share the work with our school”, says Mrs. Julie Harrison, art teacher. “So when spring came back this year, I proudly chose to focus attention back to the work. I will be giving away the panels to one talented student from each homeroom class. All I need for them to do is visit the CES Facebook Page and make a positive comment about art under the photo of their class poster. All classes are organized by the homeroom teacher’s name from last school year (2019-2020).”

Youth Art Month exists to:
- Recognize art education as a viable factor in the total education curriculum that develops citizens of a global society.
- Expand art programs in schools and stimulate new art programs.
- Encourage commitment to the arts by students, community organizations, and individuals everywhere.
- Provide additional opportunities for individuals of all ages to participate in creative art learning
- Reflect and demonstrate the goals of the National Art Education Association that work toward the improvement of art education at all levels.
