It was not looking good early for the Chilton County High School Lady Tigers softball on Feb. 22.

After jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in their game against the Oak Mountain Eagles, the Lady Tigers yielded six of the next seven runs scored in the game, and found themselves in a 6-2 hole going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

That four-run deficit would hold for two more innings as each team traded blows, resulting in the Eagles having a 9-5 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning.

Then the Lady Tigers got to work.

After an Emma Deason walk and a passed ball that moved her to second base, Maddie Giles singled up the middle, getting Deason home to cut the deficit to three.

That’s when Ty’eisha Williams stepped up to the plate. The ninth-grade infielder, who made the varsity softball team as a seventh grader, had already sent a shot over the left field fence for a run in the bottom of the fourth. This time, she went to left field again, sending in three runs to tie up the score at nine runs apiece.

“God gifted her with just a tremendous amount of power and talent,” said CCHS assistant coach Johnny Giles of Williams. “She came onto the softball field for one practice prior to her first game. She has still only been to one practice. Basketball kept her out of practice for three weeks prior to softball starting. She walked right out onto the field, and it took her a couple of days to really get cranking but … she’s just a special kid that’s all I know to say.”

That God-gifted power and talent was on display all night, and after sending the game to extra innings, she showed it again in the eighth.

After the Lady Tigers yielded two runs in the top half of the eighth, resulting in an 11-9 deficit, they once again needed to rally to win the game. A two-out error by Eagles outfielder Dawn Autry got Gracie Brewer across the plate for the Lady Tigers to cut the lead to one. A couple of walks loaded the bases with Williams up to bat.

And once again, she delivered. Williams cranked a line drive double to her favorite spot of the night, left field, driving in two runs to win the game for the Lady Tigers 12-11. The win ended a two-game losing streak.

Williams ended the night having gone 3-for-4 from the plate with two home runs and six RBI’s.

The Lady Tigers will have six days off before hitting the field next against Thorsby on March 1.
