The Great Commission Christian Center served free lunch plates to the community June 13 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.  The Christian Center’s theme is “Sowing Love in Action.” Lunch plates will be given to everyone but are especially meant to give-back to police officers, firefighters, nurses, sanitation workers and those that serve the community.

“During this climate of COVID-19 and with the racial tension our world is experiencing, it is important now more than ever to give back to your community,” church founder and Senior Pastor Lenard Rogers said.

Bishop Rogers, a Clanton native, felt led to begin the Great Commission Christian Center in 2011 so that all people may have a place to worship God freely. The church’s motto is “Empowering God’s People to Change the World.” Rogers hopes that this event will be an example of love and appreciation to the community during difficult times.

“Our church is largely African-American. In a time of division, it is our sincere desire to come together as Christians. We are Christians, first,” said Rogers. “Outreach is a large part of who we are.”

The church’s namesake, “Great Commission” comes from the instruction that Jesus Christ gave his disciples to spread the gospel to all parts of the world.

Church organizers will serve to-go plates curbside on June 13. Plates will include fried chicken, French fries, dessert and a drink. People are encouraged to stay in their vehicle, and to-go plates will be brought to your car window. Organizers will also be wearing masks, gloves and social distancing. Anyone that wishes to volunteer is welcome.

“There is no cost for the lunch plates, Jesus already paid the price for you and me,” said Rogers.

The Great Commission Christian Center is located at 407 Second Ave. South, Clanton. Drive-In Worship service and Facebook Live worship begins 8 a.m on Sunday mornings. For more information, contact Great Commission Christian Center at (205) 258-5225.
