The Chilton County Board of Education is accepting applications to appoint a board member to fill the unexpired term of Brian Jackson.

Jackson announced his resignation at the last public meeting of the board, effective June 1.

The deadline to apply for the position is June 8 at 4 p.m.

Applicants must meet the same qualification that someone running in an election for the position would need to meet.

According to information from the Chilton County Board of Education, this includes being a resident of Chilton County for at least 90 days with a high school diploma or the equivalent and being at least 21 years old with “good moral character.”

Members of the Chilton County Commission, those on the national sex offender registry, members of the governing bodies for private elementary or secondary schools and convicted felons are ineligible to serve on the Board of Education.

“Interested candidates are encouraged to refer to Alabama Code §16-8-1, §16-8-2 and §16-8-6 for information regarding eligibility, qualifications, and other requirements for appointment to this position,” a release from the BOE stated. “Interested candidates should also refer to the School Board Governance Improvement Act for the duties and responsibilities of this position. A copy of the School Board Governance Improvement Act is available at the Board’s website: www.chilton.k12.al.us.”

Those interested in applying must fill out a “Statement Attesting to Meeting the Requirements for Appointment to Chilton County Board of Education and pay for and complete a background check.”

The statement can be accessed on the school board website at the Chilton County Board of Education office, 1705 Lay Dam Road.

The completed form as well as “proof of residency, background check confirmation, a letter of interest and/or resume” have to be mailed to the BOE or emailed to Board President Angie Sanderson at amsanderson@chiltonboe.com.
