The Maplesville Town Council addressed a variety of community and department concerns during its meeting on May 11.

Adding speed bumps to Reynolds Street was approved after a community member told the Council about cars speeding on the road. Young children who live on this road sometimes ride their bikes on it.

The town will also be increasing police patrol in some areas in response to recent burglaries.

Repairs at the fire department were approved unanimously with one abstention. Council member Shelia Hall abstained so there would not be a conflict of interest because she is a member of the volunteer fire department. Repairs will be made to the department’s rollup door, and electric door openers will be installed.

A vote to purchase new emergency communication radios was tabled to gather more information. A countywide emergency communications system is in the works but has not been fully constructed.

The Maplesville Library has reopened to the public. Town Clerk Dawn Smitherman said community members wanting to use the library needs to knock on the front door at city hall to be let in. The computers are available but only two can be in use at a time in order to continue following social distancing.

Also during the meeting, the Council approved:

• Renewing an agreement with M4A for meals at the Senior Center.
• Making Officer Edwin Freeman full-time with the police department. He has previously been part-time with the department. Hiring a new part-time officer was tabled for a future meeting.
• Selling a surplus utility trailer to the only bidder for $50.50.

Maplesville Town hall will be closed on May 25 in observance of Memorial Day.
