Broken Vessels is a ministry started by someone who had found a beginning through a recovery program and wanted to provide the same hope to others.

Founder Mary Morgan said she had struggled with addiction to drugs and alcohol, found recovery at My Sister’s Place in Calera and wanted to help others dealing with addiction in Chilton County.

She said many in the community knew her when she was growing up and know how bad “it had gotten.”

However, she said her life now “gives them hope. It inspires them.”

While many in the group struggle with addiction to alcohol or drugs, Morgan said the group is open to anyone facing an addiction.

“It is a faith-based recovery meeting, focused on Christ as our Savior and working the 12 recovery steps,” Morgan said.

She said everyone struggling with addiction is really “chasing the same thing.”

“No matter what the addiction was, whether it was drugs or alcohol or food or relationships … whatever it is, we are trying to fill a need that only God can fill,” Morgan said.

The meeting does not focus on what the addiction is but on how to recover one’s life through Jesus Christ.

Broken Vessels will commemorate the one-year anniversary of its founding during its April 14 meeting. There will be a speaker giving their testimony and light refreshments.

“The meeting will officially begin at 6 p.m., but fellowship will begin at 5:30 p.m.,” Morgan said.

Child care is also provided.

In the past year, the group has “grown a good bit,” Morgan said.

Some initially attended to fulfill court-ordered attendance to a recovery program. Morgan said some of these members are now coming because they want to be there, not just because they are bring required to attend.

The group meets on Tuesdays at the Thorsby Annex on Highway 31 in Thorsby (except for the first Tuesday of each month). Each meeting is led by Candice Chapman and Shaune Gregory.

A time of fellowship begins at 5:30 p.m. and the actual meeting is held at 6 p.m.
