Opinion: County baseball tournament needs to happen

This week’s county basketball tournament had everything you want as a sports fan.

An energetic atmosphere, intense action on the court, buzzer beaters, upsets and most importantly, county pride no matter which direction you looked.

All of that got me thinking, yet again, about the fact that we don’t have a baseball county tournament.

Every time that reality pops into my mind, which is often, it leads to me scratching my head from confusion.

I understand sports such as football and track and field not having county tournaments for obviously reasons.

However, baseball, similar to basketball, volleyball and softball, seems to be a natural fit for a tournament-style format.

I’ve heard all the reasons, and they are all based around a disagreement and a decision to quit the tournament years ago.

That was a long time ago, and since then all but one of the schools have new coaches in place that were not even around and in some cases may be asking the same question I am.

I think it is time for the baseball coaches and school officials in this county to take the initiative and start the process of rebooting the county baseball tournament.

If you truly want to make it happen, it isn’t that difficult.

I challenge all athletic directors and baseball coaches to hold a meeting with the sole purpose of working out the details and any obstacles in place to hold a baseball tournament.

We have some smart people in this county, and that includes coaches.

I am confident that if you get enough of these people in the same room sitting around a table, they can leave with an agreed-upon plan for installment after just a couple of hours.

I understand that it is too late to schedule a tournament for this upcoming season, but if the process begins now, it can become a reality for 2021.
