This is the last weekend for children in Chilton County prior to school starting back next week.

The Chilton County Peach Queens are hoping to help families make the most of the weekend and celebrate the start of school by hosting a “movie in the park” event at Richard Wood Park in Thorsby on Aug. 2 at 7:30 p.m.

“We wanted it to be something Thorsby and Chilton County can come together for before school starts,” 2019 Miss Peach Mary Beth Porter said.

The featured film will be “James and the Giant Peach” and will be shown on the large projector screen at Richard Wood Park.

“It’s good for all ages,” Porter said.

The movie is very fitting and falls in line with the peach theme that seems to follow the peach queens wherever they go.

According to Porter, the movie selection came about while this year’s peach queens talking about possible movies that could be connected to a peach in some way.

Although Porter has already been a part of several events just a couple of months into her reign as 2019 Peach Queen, but this was the first time she had to go hands-on with helping schedule and plan an event.

“I’m really excited about the little things like this that we can do in the community,” Porter said. “I absolutely love it.”

One of the steps in the planning process included contacting the Thorsby Fire Department, which oversees any “movie in the park” events.

According to Porter, she reached out to Thorsby Fire Chief Josh Parker and worked out the remaining details.

Those attending are welcome to bring fold-up chairs or blankets to sit on to watch the movie. Popcorn may be available but is a specific detail still being worked out.

“When I won, I knew it was God telling me that I am a leader,” Porter said. “It’s giving me an opportunity to be a role model.”
