The Thorsby Rebels and Verbena Red Devils have advanced to the state softball tournament in their respective classes.
Thorsby plays Hatton in Class 2A on May 15 at 9 a.m., and Verbena opens up the Class 1A portion against Mars Hill Bible on May 17 at 9 a.m.
The state tournament is double elimination, with the championship scheduled for the day following the start.
Both teams bounced back from early losses in the regional tournament, which forced them to maneuver through the loser’s bracket.
However, each team was able to stave off elimination on multiple occasions in order to qualify for a shot at a state title.
Thorsby kept the dream alive after outlasting Reeltown 6-5 in eight innings.
The Rebels lost to Horseshoe Bend 5-0 early on in regionals, but were able to flip the script by winning the rematch 8-2 to clinch a spot at state.
Thorsby outscored its opponents 28-16 during the five-game stretch.
Verbena followed a similar path after an early loss to Holy Spirit in Round 2 of the winner’s bracket, only to reel off three-straight victories and qualify for the state competition alongside Holy Spirit.
The Red Devils averaged double digit runs in its regional wins.
Isabella and Billingsley also competed in regionals but were unable to advance to the state tournament. The Mustangs gave it a go but fell one game short of qualification after a 13-2 loss to Kinston.
