Chilton County Relay for Life is looking for sponsors and teams to be a part of this year’s festivities scheduled for May 3.

“The more teams and businesses that we can get registered the better,” said Quenita Mitchell, community development manager with the American Cancer Society.

According to Mitchell, a goal is to surpass 30 teams this year after having about 25 in 2018.

“Anything we can do over that would be great,” Mitchell said.

Teams can be started and comprised of by individuals or businesses within the community.

Various fundraisers are taking place leading up to the showcase, including Baugh Ford offering a test drive event on April 6, the Peach Queens and YMCA Queens selling raffle tickets and a fishing tournament on April 6.

“It’s important because everybody has been touched by cancer in some way, shape or form or knows of someone who has,” Mitchell said. “Ultimately, the goal is to have a world where cancer no longer exists.”

The survivor’s banquet will take place first at 5 p.m. at the Clanton Little League football field followed by the official kickoff of the event with a survivor’s walk and luminary service.

“Anybody who is a survivor of cancer is more than welcome,” Mitchell said. “We strongly encourage them to come out and help us celebrate them as a whole.”

Food vendors will be on hand during the event and several acts will perform on stage and provide entertainment until at least 9 p.m.

“Cancer doesn’t sleep, so why should we,” Mitchell said.
