Hugh Miller “Lally” Bates, 87, of Clanton died Thursday, February 7, 2019.
He was born July 27, 1931, in Fayette, AL, son of the late Marvin J. and the late Lillie Moore Bates.
He was a decorated Veteran of The United States Marine Corps. and a retired United States Postmaster.
Surviving are sons, Mickey (Barbara) Bates and Richard Bates; daughter, Vickey (Jerry) Grooms; grandchildren, Jarrad (Marci) Bates, Brandon (Casey) Bates, Cameron (Shelley) Bates, Candace Bates (Brent) Doriety, Amy Grooms (Mark) stephenson, Johnathan (Erica) Grooms; great-grandchildren, Luke and Hugh Bates, Cole Bates, Hannah Wilson, Maddie Wilson, Landon Stephenson, Caris, Hadassah and Elliott Doriety, Austin, Allison, Anna Grooms, Ean, Elizabeth, Ella Grooms and Becca Connell.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Janie Wade Bates, and his parents, Marvin and Lillie Bates.
Friends will be received from 1 – 2 p.m., Sunday, February 10, 2019, at First Baptist Church of Clanton. Service will be Sunday, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Clanton with Rev. Matt DeBord and Rev. Robert Griffin officiating. Interment will follow in Martin Memorial Cemetery, Clanton, Alabama.
