The Humane Society of Chilton County discussed upcoming holiday events, price changes and other business at its board meeting on Nov. 15.
The Humane Society offers a program in conjunction with Alabama Spay and Neuter where animal owners may purchase vouchers in order to have an animal fixed. The clinic is in Irondale.
“They come into the shelter and purchase the voucher, then they call Irondale to schedule an appointment,” said acting director Jennifer Fesmire. “They set up the appointment through Irondale, not us.”
Alabama Spay and Neuter will be increasing those prices in 2019. The cost will now be $55 for female dogs, $40 for male dogs or female cats, $25 for male cats and $35 for feral cats.
The Humane Society may have to increase adoption prices to make up the difference, but no changes were made official in the November meeting.
The group will be hosting an inaugural Tinsel and Tails event from noon to 6 p.m. on Dec. 8 at Wyatt Barn at the Crossroads in Clanton.
“This is the first year we have done that,” said Renee Helms. “It is a family outing. It will be for all ages. There will be items for kids and adults. We will have tacky Christmas sweaters, a holiday hound costume contest and Santa will be there for pictures.”
The Humane Society will also be hosting home for the holidays events for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
This is an event where people can take an animal out of the shelter over a holiday period. It gives them a chance to foster the animal short term.
The animal gets the benefit of spending some time away from the shelter.
The board also discussed entering the Jemison, Thorsby and Clanton Christmas parades.
In past years, dogs that have been walked as part of local Christmas parades have seen increased adoption rates.
