Libraries Rock is the theme of this year’s Chilton/Clanton Public Library summer program.
Many events have been going on throughout the summer, such as a music show, magic show, Lego block parties, movies and more.
On June 26, participants painted rocks to go with the theme of Libraries Rock.
“It’s easy to do for a large number of children, it goes with the theme and then it’s popular,” said Savannah Kitchens, library director.
All paint was washable and safe for the children.
The kids seemed to love it, as they were saying things like, “I’m making a rainbow,” “It’s swirlies” and favorite colors were “All of them.”
The library is able to offer these activities to the children through donations, making everything free.
“What we are doing today is through donations, and the rock painting has seemed to be really popular with the kids,” Renee Edwards, the children’s librarian, said.
The library also received a grant called Books Palooza.
According to Edwards, all books that are written in 2017 are sent to be critiqued or awarded, and afterwards three libraries are chosen in the state of Alabama to receive them.
The library itself has to request a grant, and the Clanton library was one of three chosen to receive 2,000 books.
“To get that grant out of that many libraries is really big,” Edwards said.
The Clanton library will have a booth set up at the Peach Jam on June 29.
“We’re just going to have a really simple craft for the kids. It’s a color scratch animal mask that’s black, and when you scratch on it with the little stick it reveals rainbow colors,” Kitchens said.
Brochures and information about the library will also be available.
On July 10, the library will be having their closing pizza party with the grand prize being a Kindle Fire.
For a chance to win this, each time a child checked out a book their name went into a drawing.
They do not have to be present to win on July 10.
