The Chilton County Board of Education held its annual meeting for public comment on May 15.
Concerns were expressed during the time with many saying they would like to speak to the board or school superintendent in private about specific issues.
Angie Sanderson said she represented a number of teachers, parents and students.
She expressed concern about the school system’s block schedule with an A/B day and week schedule.
“Our teachers are concerned about information retention in that they are having to spend a lot of class time re-teaching topics because they don’t see their students enough,” Sanderson said.
School Superintendent Tommy Glasscock said students on the Superintendent Advisor Council had conducted a survey, and the majority of students wanted to keep the block schedule because it was similar to a college schedule.
“There is never going to be a perfect schedule, but it was the students that voiced their concern about wanting to stay on the schedule A and B,” Glasscock said.
He said the principals have also given positive feedback about the schedule.
A lack of discipline in the classroom was also listed as a concern. Sanderson said she had been told about instances of students cussing at teachers and a “physically injured teacher and they were asked not to say anything to the board or the superintendent.”
Sanderson said many teachers feel there is a breakdown in communication through the chain of command.
Representatives from Maplesville presented letters of concern to the board.
