It was a fast start for the Chilton County Tigers on the first day of competition at the 2018 Gulf Coast Classic II Baseball Tournament on March 26.
CCHS swept a doubleheader by defeating Sheffield High School 11-1 and Rogers High School 11-0 to improve to a record of 13-8 on the season.
The tournament was hosted by Gulf Shores High School.
Despite winning both games by double digits, the Tigers went about getting their 11 runs in different ways.
The Tigers scored a bevy of runs late against Sheffield, while they sealed the deal early against Rogers with an eight-run first inning.
Neither game reached the seventh inning, as both were called early due to a run rule.
Senior Gabriel Gray went 5-for-7 with four RBIs in the two games.
Dalton Patterson did his part as a run producer with a team-high five RBIs on the day.
The success of Gray and Patterson each came at the bottom half of the batting order, which demonstrated the depth of the CCHS lineup.
Twelve different players crossed home plate during the Tigers’ two victories.
Dominant pitching performances were another theme in both games, as the Tigers received complete games from both its starters.
Cameron Baker struck out seven and allowed just three hits in six innings against Sheffield.
However, William Kohn followed it up with a stellar outing of his own that included 13 strikeouts, two walks and one hit in five innings.
CCHS connected on five extra base hits during the doubleheader, all doubles, two of which came off the bat of Patterson.
