Green, gold and purple were the colors for the day at the Verbena Annex on Feb. 16 as the students celebrated in the Mardi Gras parade.
Students in kindergarten through second-grade waited with anticipation for the third-grade class to start the parade. Many students wore masks they had made.
Finally, the third-grade students could be seen lining up to walk through the lines of younger students. As the parade progressed, the participants handed out necklaces and blew noise makers.
Third-grade student Gracie Raymond said she enjoyed “throwing necklaces” to the other students.
Later, candy was thrown to the children.
“That was awesome,” a student told organizer teacher Beth Anne Pope after the event.
Pope handed out Moon Pies to the students and had pralines in her classroom.
“I like themed-days,” said Pope.
Pope took the reigns of the project this year for the first time.
“I think it is fun to introduce the kids to different cultures, things they wouldn’t normally experience,” Pope said.
Former Verbena teacher Christina Cochran had started the event, and Pope said she wanted to see “the tradition continue.”
