Relay for Life looking for committee members

Chilton County Relay For Life is hosting a lunch and learn event Dec. 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Alabama Power in the “water” room.
Although informative meetings have been held in the past, this is the first time that such an event will be held during lunch hour, Community Development Manager Jeannie Smith said.
Food for the event will be catered by Heard’s BBQ in Maplesville.
The event is designed to gauge the interest of the public and invite those who are considering joining this year’s event leadership team, better known as the relay committee.
Guest speakers during the hour-long event will include Linda Hand and Ann Glasscock.
According to Smith, they will both share their experiences as past chairwomen of the committee.
They will answer any questions and inform about the mission of the organization and give examples of how it has benefited Chilton County residents in the past.
Setting a firm date and time for the Relay For Life 2018 Kickoff event in January is another item on the agenda during the lunch.
The kickoff event has been going on for about 20 years.
One of the more popular questions that Smith has heard from past meetings is about where the money goes and how it is utilized.
“We will take commitments to the committee and also go over the various roles that the committee has to offer,” Smith said.
According to Smith, there is no limit on the amount of committee members, and they will accept all the help that people are able to offer.
The amount of members varies each year and has ranged from six to 20-plus on a given year.
“We will always find a place for them to serve,” Smith said.
The event is free to the public, and although reservations are not required, they are welcome by contacting Smith at (334) 410-0588 or jeannie.smith@cancer.org.
