A water main emergency in Maplesville caused Maplesville High School to dismiss at 1 p.m. today.
Principal Steven Hunter said the water had to be turned off to the school in order for crews to work on the problem, so students had to be dismissed early.
School staff remained at the school as children waited to be picked up.
All on-campus afterschool activities have been canceled.
The MHS football team will still participate in tonight’s away game.
Maplesville water crews were working to correct the issue at 1:30 p.m.
Linda Smitherman of the Maplesville Utility Board said water should be restored by 2 :30 p.m.
“A 6 inch pipe blew out about half a mile from the school,” Smitherman said.
Water customers from on Alabama 139 from Mulberry Road to the end of the line had water service interrupted. Others experienced low water pressure.
