Floyd Bennett Guy
Floyd Bennett Guy, 83, son of M.E. and Blanche Floyd Guy was born in Birmingham on Oct. 11, 1933. After a long, full life Floyd passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 19, at home surrounded by family and friends.
Floyd was one of 11 children and known affectionately to his family as “Ben.” He spent most of his childhood in Jemison and graduated from Jemison High School in May 1952. Upon graduation Ben went to Washington, D.C. where he worked with the FBI.
In October 1952, Ben enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served 20 ½ years. His military assignments took Ben and his family to several stateside locations as well as Paris, France and Bitburg, Germany. Ben was honorably discharged in July 1973 and returned to Jemison with his wife Agnes, daughters Monica, Patty, and Vicky and son Johnny.
Ben professed his life to Christ at an early age and was a long time member of Jemison First Baptist Church at the time of his death. His love of the Lord was seen by all. Ben especially loved little children and they loved him. He would frequently surprise the 2nd graders at Thorsby Elementary, filling their treasure chest with candy and goodies.
Ben was an outstanding athlete and played football, basketball, and baseball in high school, He continued playing baseball on the U.S. Air Force team, traveling to many countries for tournaments and championships.
Upon retirement Ben took up the game of golf, playing in numerous amateur and fund-raising tournaments. He loved watching sports on television including both Alabama and Auburn football games, golf, and baseball including his beloved St. Louis Cardinals.
Ben’s ability to tell a tale will be missed by his family as many memories were shared sitting around the dining room table or while he sat in his favorite recliner. Agnes affectionately called him her “Münchausen” (tall tale teller).
Ben was preceded in death by his parents, Marion Ester and Blanche F. Guy; wife of 53 years, Agnes Scheid Guy; brothers, Jim Guy, Eugene Guy, and Leslie “Babe” Guy; and sisters, Doris Allen, Marie Shaw, and Sarah Guy.
