Volleyball became a part of Chilton County High School senior Kaley Lucas’ life in eighth grade, and now she will continue playing the game after signing a scholarship to Wallace Community College in Selma.
Lucas made her decision known during a signing ceremony that took place on March 20 in the CCHS cafeteria.
With her family by her side, they looked on as Lucas signed the dotted line and made her next major life decision.
According to Lucas, Wallace was the first school that she tried out for during her junior year of high school.
She came back to try out once again her senior year, and shortly afterwards was offered a chance to play at the next level.
“I was pretty pumped,” Lucas said.
The emotions that take place when signing day finally arrives are something that many signees experience, and Lucas was no different.
“I was nervous and happy,” Lucas said. “It was finally getting real.”
It has been quite a senior year for Lucas, who was a key figure among a senior-laden team that won its area and earned a shot to play in the postseason.
“It was a great experience, and what a way to finish it off,” Lucas said.
Throughout her high school career Lucas was a born leader on the floor, and someone that her fellow teammates both veteran and young looked towards for support.
“She’s always been a strong leader, even in eighth grade,” CCHS head coach Emily Driver said. “She has just continued to develop that over the years.”
The strength of Lucas’ game is creating havoc around the net with her ability to rack up blocks and kills.
“I look forward to learning more about the sport and being in a different environment,” Lucas said. “I don’t know what to expect, but I’m ready for it.”
