Parents in need of assistance with purchasing Christmas gifts for their children will have a saving grace this holiday season.

The Salvation Army of Shelby and Chilton Counties is offering its Christmas Angel Tree Program in which parents can register to receive assistance for children 12 and under.

The Angel Tree program began in 1979 in Lynchburg, Va. with the goal of getting the community personally involved by sharing with those less fortunate than themselves. It provides gifts such as toys and clothing to thousands of children who otherwise might not have anything for Christmas.

Registration dates are Oct. 6 and 7, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-3:30 p.m., and Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to noon.

At registration, parents must provide the following documentation in order to apply: Head of household’s photo ID, birth certificate and Social Security Number for their children, proof of guardianship, proof of residency, proof of income and proof of all expenses.

Registration will be done on a walk-in, first come first serve basis. Families needing to apply must go to The Salvation Army at 108 Plaza Circle, Suite E in Alabaster and must be a Chilton County resident.

There will be adequate signage and attendants outside of the building to direct parents where to go.
