Six years ago, Joe Bice and his family made a decision to transition from the world of feed and seed to the clothing industry and has not looked back.

Bice’s family opened Chilton Feed and Seed in 1935, but sold the business in 2010.

It did not take long for Bice to dive into a new business venture, as he opened up Buck’s Clothing just down the road from Chilton Feed and Seed on Second Avenue North in Clanton.

“My truck knows the way, but those first couple of months I had to teach it to stop a little farther up the road,” Bice said.

It was quite an adjustment in mindset for Bice, who realized early on that not every customer has the same taste in clothes.

There are some advantages that Bice has enjoyed since owning Buck’s, which include spending more time with his wife and two kids.

“I’ve enjoyed spending more time with them, and it’s definitely a cooler place to be in the summer,” Bice said.

According to Bice, 75 percent of Buck’s customers are regulars that have continued to support the family throughout the switch from feed and seed to clothing.

Shirts, pants, boots and various accessories such as belts, hats wallets, socks and mugs are on display throughout the store.

Since it opened, Buck’s has sought to expand its selection, while attempting to remain true to its origins of offering work apparel.

Carhartt is the most popular brand of clothing, while work boots are one of the most sold items.

“As long as it’s part of a line that I sell, I can order it for you,” Bice said.

The busy season is typically begins in the middle of September and ends toward the middle of January.

This is the opposite of owning a feed and seed store, where the spring and summer months are the busiest season, Bice said.

Buck’s Clothing is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday and Saturday, while closed Sunday.
