ALABASTER – A Clanton man is dead, one person is injured and another man is facing criminal charges after a fatal three-vehicle wreck on Interstate 65 just south of Alabaster, according to Alabama State Troopers.
The crash happened at about 11:50 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4, about one mile south of Alabaster on I-65. The driver of a 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer was parked on the shoulder of I-65 when a 2008 Nissan Altima driven by 28-year-old Calera resident Daniel Joseph Robinson struck the Mitsubishi.
The Lancer was then struck again by a 2006 Hyundai Sonata, and the Lancer caught fire. The driver of the Mitsubishi, who has been identified as 43-year-old Clanton resident Robert Alan Gentry, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to State Troopers.
Robinson was not injured in the crash, and the driver of the Sonata was taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol was a factor in the crash,” read a State Troopers statement.
According to Shelby County Jail records, Robinson, who lists an address on Daventry Trail in Calera, was booked into the jail on Aug. 5 on a misdemeanor drunken driving charge. Shelby County court records indicate Robinson recorded a blood-alcohol content of 0.06 percent at the time of his arrest.
