Herman Joseph Popwell

Mr. Herman Joseph “Joe” Popwell, 81, of Newnan, previously of Fayetteville, passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2016.
He was born in Clanton, Alabama to Mary Cagle and Fonza Ivan Popwell on June 25, 1934, the eighth of 10 children.
He grew up in and around Chilton County Alabama, and graduated from Chilton County High School in 1952. After serving in the Unites States Navy for three years, he married his high school sweetheart Ann Fiquette, and graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
He and Ann made their home in Atlanta, Georgia, where they raised two children while Joe worked for Georgia Power Company. During this time he earned a Law Degree from Atlanta Law School.
He retired from GPC after more than 30 years but immediately returned to work as a consultant for the Southern Company.
He will be remembered for endless energy and work ethic, love for his family, fierce loyalty and steadfast faithfulness to friends, brilliant memory, humility, and the personal interest he took with each new acquaintance.
Joe is preceded in death by his wife Ann and son Robert K. Popwell. He is survived by his daughter Olive (Kenneth) Ashley, grandchildren Emmaline, Thomas, and Joseph Ashley and Christopher B. Popwell; and brothers Paul Popwell, Dalton Popwell, and Fred Popwell.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 11, 2016, at 12 p.m. at the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Piedmont Cancer Institute.
