A horse and rider were struck by a vehicle Sunday on County Road 42 near Jemison.

The horse’s rider, a 24-year-old Jemison female, suffered critical injuries and was transported to UAB hospital via emergency helicopter, and the driver of the vehicle, a 2011 Toyota Camry, was also hospitalized, according to Sgt. Steve Jarrett with Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

The injuries to the driver of the vehicle were not considered critical.

The conditions of the victims could not be determined by The Clanton Advertiser.

The incident occurred at 9:25 p.m. near County Road 25 just outside Jemison city limits.

The horse and rider were crossing the road when they were struck, said Jarrett, who added that the horse was black and the rider was wearing dark colored clothing, making them difficult to see at night.

The horse was checked on the scene.

“A vet came out and said the horse was OK,” Jarrett said.

Jemison Fire Department Chief John Dennis, whose agency was the first to respond to the scene, said the rider of the horse lived close by.

The driver of the vehicle was a Jemison resident, Jarrett said.
