Organizers of the Chilton County Humane Society’s second annual Easter petting zoo and pony ride fundraiser are hoping the forecast of rain on Saturday will not damper the plans.
“We are just crossing our fingers that the rain doesn’t come until after the event,” said Katherine Reece with the Humane Society. “Right now, it is looking like the rain might hold off until later in the day.”
The event will include a petting zoo, pony rides, train rides, Easter egg hunts, Easter egg races, an Easter bonnet contest, carnival style games and prizes for children of all ages.
“There will also be different types of games too,” Reece said. “We will have one game where the kids will try to run with an egg on their head and keep the egg from falling off.”
Reece said more than 2,000 plastic eggs were donated from individuals in the community, and volunteers at the Humane Society have been stuffing the eggs with candy for several weeks.
“We have so many eggs,” Reece said. “There will be plenty.”
Reece said there will be about 20-25 vendors with booths including arts and crafts.
“We will have things for the whole family,” Reece said. “It is a good event for people who just want to get out and enjoy the day with their family.”
The event starts at 10 a.m. and lasts until 2 p.m. at Ollie Park next to the YMCA in Clanton.
There is a $5 admission fee.
Reece said the Coca-Cola Company donated soft drinks for the event so individuals can receive a free soft drink with the purchase of a hot dog.
There are eight sponsors for the event this year that helped pay for the petting zoo including Lewis Machine Company, Lee Helms Associates, Hayes Drug and Gift, Myers Business Products, Shelby Concrete, Central Alabama Electric Cooperative, Montevallo Dog House and Cats Boarding, and Connell’s Pest Control.
“We are very thankful for the sponsors,” Reece said. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to have a lot of the different activities at the event.”
Reece said if the event is cancelled due to rain, individuals can check the Chilton County Humane Society’s Facebook page for more information or call (205) 755-9170.
