New Jemison beauty shop brings retro appeal

A new beauty shop in Jemison invites customers to take a step back to the 1950s with retro designs and themes.
“I have always loved the 1950s design,” KayLa’s Beauty Shop owner KayLa Forbach said. “I love looking at pinup hair and watching old movies to get design ideas.”
Forbach, a cosmetologist, who previously cut hair in Shelby County, decided to open her own business near her home in Jemison in January.
“I knew I wanted to open my own beauty shop,” Forbach said. “I have kids and a family, so it made sense to just open it near my home. I have been open for about a week or two, and I am just excited to serve new customers. I want people to feel like they are stepping back in time a little bit when they come inside. I tried to recreate everything I could to be like the 1950s, but the only thing I didn’t do was decide to offer 5-cent haircuts.”
The beauty shop is located next door to Forbach’s home, and features décor from the 1950s including pictures of Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe, and 1950s style music plays in the background.
A magazine rack holds copies of recent magazines as well as a magazine from 1955 for customers to enjoy reading while having their hair cut.
Forbach offers coloring, haircuts, perms, old-fashioned roller sets, waxing services, makeup, men and children’s hair, and she can do pageant and wedding hairstyles.
“My favorite thing about cutting hair is when a customer will come in and want a totally new look,” Forbach said. “I enjoy seeing the transformation and working on that for them. I also really enjoy making people feel good about themselves.”
Currently, KayLa’s Beauty Shop is open Monday-Saturday but by appointment only.
“It is best for people to call ahead and set up an appointment,” Forbach said.
KayLa’s Beauty Shop is located at 220 County Road 1033 in Jemison. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (205) 688-6341 or visit KayLa’s Beauty Shop on Facebook.
