The Chilton County Humane Society is hosting Skate with Santa on Dec. 4 from 4-6 p.m.
The event will be held at Southern Country Dance and Skate in Clanton for children of all ages.
“We are really appreciative of Southern Country Dance and Skate for donating the rink to us,” Humane Society board member Katherine Reece said.
There is a $10 entry fee for anyone wishing to skate, which includes skate rental, a printed picture with Santa, homemade baked goods and hot chocolate.
“The money raised at this event will really help us at the shelter,” Reece said. “We have had some really great months lately. In October, we were able to adopt 121 animals out. Our average is usually about 20 per month. This was all thanks to some generous donors.”
Reece said the shelter received large donations from two couples, which allowed the shelter to lower the prices on animals needing to be adopted.
Currently, the adoption rate for dogs at the shelter is $100.
“We also have a special on our senior dogs, which we consider to be six years of age and older,” Reece said. “The senior dogs are only $50, and we are hoping the community steps up and helps out with those.”
Reece said due to the donations, the shelter has also been able to offer specials including an $11 Veterans Day special and a Black Friday special where all black dogs and cats were $20.
“Even with the momentum we have had at the shelter, we are still having a large amount of intakes each month,” Reece said. “We are still taking in about 150 animals a month. We rely on fundraisers and the support from the community to keep things going.”
Those interested in attending the Skate with Santa event have the option to wear pajamas.
“We thought it would be fun if kids wanted to come wearing pajamas, but if they don’t want to, they can still skate and have a good time,” Reece said.
