Thorsby will offer a package of incentives to someone wanting to open a grocery store at the location of the former Mizzell’s Super Saver.

The town’s Council unanimously approved the package at a regular meeting Monday.

The store’s new owner would pay half of the required sales tax for one year (1.5 percent instead of 3 percent), would be exempt from having to obtain a business license (an estimated cost of $500) and would be exempt from water and sewer rates for one year.

Wayne Cleckler, who operates Maplesville Supermarket, is in the process of purchasing the property at 11 Montgomery Avenue in Thorsby, according to town officials.

Council members expressed concern about setting a precedent for tax breaks and how much money the town would be spending for water and sewer service, but in the end agreed that it was in the town’s best interest to help the new business get started.

In other business, the council:

•Heard that Georgia-Pacific had donated $1,500 to the town’s police department, $1,500 to the fire department and $1,000 to parks. Council members signed a letter thanking the company for the donations.

•Entered into executive session to discuss pending litigation, and took no action afterward, except to pay appropriate bills.

•Tabled a decision about new rental fees and regulations for the pavilion at Richard Wood Park.

•Approved the purchase of an LED message board for the Public Works Department. Public Works Director Terry Jackson said the message on the board can be changed, and the item would be useful for town employees working on roadways and in various other situations. Jackson said the department could use two of the message boards, but the council approved the purchase of one for $1,500 to see how it would work.

•Approved a donation of $500 to the Chilton County 4-H Livestock Skill-a-thon team, which won first place in the state competition and is raising funds to compete at the national contest at Louisville on Nov. 16. Team members include Aniston Bolding, Carson Littleton, Cody Lucas and Jerrett Posey.

•Heard from developer Wayne Nelson about his desire to grant the road Kristin Lane to the town. Town clerk Crystal Smith said a resolution would need to be written and approved by the council, and that she would prepare a resolution for the next meeting.

•Approved minutes from the Oct. 19 meeting.
