Martha Jeanette Short Smitherman, 87, of Clanton, died Sept. 12 at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster.

She was born on April 14, 1928, in Clanton, the daughter of the late Johnny Short and the late Leila Weldon Short.

She was a machine operator.

Surviving are her son, Joe Dedman (Carol) of Clanton; daughters, Nita Summerlin (David) of Selma, Gina Lecroy (Randy) of Clanton, Lisa Paris (Jason) of Deatsville; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, a host of other family; brothers, Melton Short (Linda) of Clanton, J.W. Short (Glenda) of Alabaster; sisters, Sally Davis of Clanton and Delene Carroll (Erskine) of Clanton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny and Leila Short; daughter, Sheila Ann Smitherman; two sisters and one brother.

Friends were received from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 14 at Martin Funeral Home.

Services will be held Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. at Martin Chapel with the Rev. Melton Short and William Earl Short officiating.

Interment will follow in New Harmony Holiness Cemetery in Clanton.
