Residents will have an opportunity this month to meet racers from the Montgomery Motor Speedway and help a local animal shelter.

The event, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Clanton Walmart parking lot, will benefit the Chilton County Humane Society.

Event organizer Kim McCulla said a fellow shelter volunteer had the idea of working with the speedway.

“It just kind of grew from there,” McCulla said.

Though final arrangements are still being made, several drivers are expected to be available to meet fans at the event.

McCulla said the drivers would include Travis Cleckler of Clanton and multiple cars and drivers from Alabaster-based Adventures in Racing.

Dave Williams, husband of shelter volunteer Robbie Williams, will be at the event with his retired pace car, McCulla said.

A representative from the speedway will also be present.

McCulla said attendees could bring items they would like autographed, including flags and pictures.

T-shirts will be given away at the event, animals will be available for adoption and there will be other attractions.

“It will be a lot of fun,” McCulla said.

Tickets will be on sale at the event for the Montgomery Motor Speedway race on Aug. 29. Half of the proceeds from ticket sales at the event will be donated to the shelter.

Admission to the event on Aug. 22 will be the donation of items needed by the Humane Society, including dog or puppy food, cat litter, bleach, paper towels and Fabuloso all-purpose cleaner.

Other needs can be found at ChiltonCountyHumaneSociety.org.

If no donation is offered, admission will be $5.
