Full day of fun planned for Relay For Life

Chilton County’s Relay For Life event will continue its evolution in 2015.
One year after the format was changed, this year’s Relay, scheduled for April 25, will be held in a different location: the Clanton Conference and Performing Arts Center.
The event was originally supposed to be held at Goose Pond Park in Clanton but was moved indoors because of the threat of rain.
Chilton County Relay For Life Chairwoman Courtney Brock said the event was being moved to take advantage of the shade and parking offered at Goose Pond Park.
“We just want to get as many survivors out to be recognized as we can,” Brock said.
The 2015 event, like last year, will be held from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on a Saturday. Prior to last year, the event began at 6 p.m. on Friday and ended at 6 a.m. the next morning.
Brock said the new format worked well last year, as there was a steady crowd throughout the day. In the past, there might be a lot of people present for the beginning, but the crowd would dwindle throughout the event.
There will be some additional changes to the schedule. The Survivor Lap will take place at 6 p.m. instead of at the start of the event.
Performances will be held mostly from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., including “Relay Idol,” which will feature Chilton County High School “Blast from the Past” crew members having a “singoff.” Donations will be collected, and whoever collects the most money will be the winner.
The Luminaria Ceremony, release of sky lanterns and Fight Back Ceremony will all follow the Survivor Lap.
Survivors are encouraged to stay at the event as long as possible, as different events are planned for them throughout the day.
“We encourage them to come out and spend the day if possible,” Brock said.
Survivors should also bring their caregivers, if possible, because organizers would like to recognize them also.
“Caregivers kind of get left out,” Brock said. “They’re in the fight with that survivor.”
The theme of this year’s Relay effort is “Lights, Camera, Cure.” Teams were asked to pick a movie to be their individual theme and design their T-shirts, decorate their camp sites and even dress as characters from the movie they choose.
The fundraising goal for Chilton County’s 2015 Relay For Life is $135,000.
