Thorsby’s two games against Ranburne on Saturday were polar opposites, except for that the Rebels (21-3) won both.
THS routed the Bulldogs in Game 2, 10-0, but the first game of the best-of-three series wasn’t decided until the final at-bat.
Ranburne held a 1-0 edge going into the bottom of the third inning, but then Thorsby took a 4-1 lead on two-out, run-scoring hits by Bailey Sellers and Dylan Carroll.
The Rebels seemed to be cruising to an easy Game 1 win, leading 5-1 in the top of the sixth inning, but three hits and three walks allowed by two Thorsby pitchers in the frame allowed Ranburne to tie the game at 5-all.
In a game being played at Calera High School because of the amount of moisture remaining at Thorsby’s field, Ranburne took a 7-5 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Tyler Owens, who started on the mound for THS, started things off with a walk. Two more walks were issued, to Gray Bice and Zach Morris, and the Rebels had something going.
A new pitcher was brought in, but the knuckleballer promptly hit Kevin Mims with a pitch to force in one run and walked Conner McRae for another Thorsby run.
Then, with the bases still loaded and facing a full count, Thorsby’s Chris Brown took a full count pitch outside the strike zone to force in the game-winning run.
Bailey Sellers recorded Ranburne’s final two outs of the game and was the winning pitcher. Owens struck out three in five innings pitched, allowing three earned runs on five hits and six walks.
McRae went 3-for-3 at the plate with one walk, one run scored and three RBI.
Sellers went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Carroll went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
In Game 2, Thorsby posted four runs in the third inning and four more runs in the fourth to cruise to victory.
Owens went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs and two RBI. Carroll went 4-for-4 with one walk, one run and two RBI. Wesley Posey went 2-for-5.
Sellers pitched six scoreless innings, striking out six while scattering three hits and six walks.
