A Jemison man led a Chilton County Sheriff’s deputy on a car chase on Thursday night before flipping his vehicle several times and sustaining life-threatening injuries.

According to Shane Mayfield with the Chilton County Sheriff’s Department, a deputy clocked a vehicle speeding south on U.S. Highway 155 in Jemison.

Mayfield said the deputy attempted to pull over the vehicle, but the driver would not stop and eventually turned right onto County Road 131.

Once the vehicle, a Hyundai Santa Fe, turned on County Road 131, Mayfield said the vehicle began to travel at a high rate of speed and the driver hit a “rise in the road,” which led to the car flipping several times.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle and sustained life-threatening injuries.

Jemison Fire Chief John Dennis said JFD responded to the scene around 10:20 p.m. and transported the driver to a landing zone where he was then taken by emergency helicopter to UAB.

Mayfield said authorities identified the driver as 49-year-old James Perry Jr. of Jemison.

As of Friday afternoon, Mayfield said Perry was listed in stable condition at UAB.

Authorities believe Perry lives on County Road 131.

Mayfield said Alabama State Troopers are working the incident, but Perry will face traffic offense charges with the sheriff’s department.
