The Thorsby Town Council voted unanimously to accept the Alabama Forestry Commission’s request to have 22.48 acres off County Road 74 annexed into the city.

The proposal will be sent to Gov. Robert Bentley to sign. The land is owned by the Forestry Commission, and current structures on the site, which will be leased by the city, will be used for a maintenance shop and storage for the city.

The council, which saw councilman Marvin Crumpton and councilwoman Nicole Hilyer absent, also:

• Voted unanimously to approve making repairs to the Helen Jenkins Chapel bell tower at a Feb. 2 meeting. Water leaks have been found in the tower, causing rotten wood to appear under vinyl.

• Voted unanimously to approve the travel of Sewer and Water Department Superintendent Terry Jackson to an Alabama Rural Water training conference in Montgomery, as well as a waste water conference in Gulf Shores. The council also approved the purchase of new safety glasses for Jackson.

• Heard from Jackson about the purchase of a new pump for the water treatment lagoon, valued at $10,500. Jackson also stated the new pump was running more efficiently, and could lead to savings on the town’s power bill.

• Voted unanimously to approve the travel of city clerk Crystal Smith to attend a city clerk class in Tuscaloosa on Feb. 18.

• Discussed making repairs to the restrooms at Richard Wood Park, including removal and replacement of a urinal as well as repainting the floor with an epoxy paint.

• Discussed the the possible purchase of an LED sign at a discounted rate from Stewart Signs in Clanton.

• Announced that Sen. Cam Ward (R-Alabaster) will be at the town hall at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 4 to present a grant for the Swedish Festival.

• Scheduled a work session for Feb. 12 at 6 p.m.

• Voted unanimously to pay bills and transfer funds.
