Tales of a simpler time in a small, country, town, fill up the pages of Montevallo native Mike Mahan’s book.

Mahan was the guest speaker at the first book lecture of 2015 at the Chilton-Clanton Public Library on Tuesday.

“I’m not an author; I just tell stories,” Mahan told those in attendance. “I wanted to write something about where I grew up, how it was to live there, and everyone in the town.”

Mahan’s book, “No Hill Too High for a Stepper” was published two years ago by NewSouth Publishing, detailing the accounts of growing up as a child in Montevallo.

Mahan’s parents, a barber and a beautician, owned their own shop and home on Shelby Street in Montevallo where Mahan recollects with vivid memory the people and places that made up the town.

“This was an era of the 1930s-1950s where people in the town took care of each other,” Mahan said.

Mahan, a dentist in Montevallo, said he started writing the book in 2006 but continued writing it for several years until it was published.

Mahan’s wife, Linda, read excerpts of the book during the lecture on Tuesday.
