Organizers make last-minute preparations for county fair

With the 2014 Chilton County Fair less than two weeks away, event organizers are working to finalize last-minute plans.
Scott Zuelzke with the Clanton Kiwanis Club said a line-up of local entertainment to be offered each night at the fair has been posted on the Chilton County Fair Facebook page.
“We are excited and looking forward to the events,” Zuelzke said.
The event will be located this year at Clanton City Park, in the grassy area and parking lot near the playground.
Admission for the fair will be $2 per person, which is reduced from the $4 admission in 2013.
The line-up includes performances from Attitudes Dance at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 14, Lloyd Nutter will present gospel music from 7-9 p.m. Oct. 16, Common Ground Bluegrass Gospel Band will be performing from 7-9 p.m. Oct. 17, Central Dance Troupe will be performing at 5:15 p.m. Oct. 18, and Lloyd Nutter will present gospel music from 7-9 p.m.
This will be the first year the event will not be held in its long-time location when it became a safety hazard for the adjacent Chilton County Airport.
The fair will be open at 6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Parking will be free and available in all of the surrounding parking lots to Clanton City Park.
The Clanton Kiwanis Club uses all fair proceeds to support different charitable organizations in the community, Zuelzke said.
Zuelzke said organizers discovered in recent weeks the stage used for entertainment at the fair is missing, and are currently “scrambling” to come up with something to use for the entertainment.
Zuelzke said the stage is separated into roughly 12 sections, and would have been used for the 2013 fair.
“We aren’t sure what happened to the stage, but if someone borrowed it, we really need it back,” Zuelzke said.
The Chilton County Commission voted in January to allow the Airport Authority to have three county-owned buildings torn down which include the exhibition hall, a restroom facility and concrete “pig barn,” but Zuelzke said it is his understanding the stage was moved before the buildings were torn down.
“If anyone knows what might have happened to it, we would appreciate them letting us know,” Zuelzke said.
For updates about the fair, Zuelzke encouraged residents to check the Chilton County Fair Facebook page.
