Commission passes budget amid concerns about shrinking revenue

In other news, the commission:

•Voted to purchase seven acres of property near the old Henry M. Adair School located at 102 First St. S. in Clanton for roughly $32,000.

•Appointed Van Forrester, Wesley Hicks and Elizabeth Huntley to the Chilton County Industrial Development Board.

•Voted to change the location of a work session to discuss economic development on Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. from the Chilton County Courthouse to Jefferson State Community College Clanton Campus.

•Voted to schedule all commission meetings for 2015 at 6 p.m.

•Voted to cancel the Memorial Day 2015 commission meeting and move the Monday meeting scheduled for Columbus Day to Tuesday, at the request of Hayes.

Caton, Welch and Parnell voted against the motion with Hayes, Headley, Moore and Agee voting in favor.

•Heard from members of the Chilton County Humane Society regarding the success of a recent volunteer day at the shelter, and introduced the new interim director Sandra Moon.

•Heard from Lally Bates with American Legion Post 6 regarding the cancellation of liability insurance at Post 6.

Bates explained to commissioners that Post 6 has served as a voting place since 1954, but lack of funds due to changes with the Chilton County Fair have prompted Post 6 to stop paying for liability insurance.

“You are still welcome to use that place as a voting place,” Bates said. “I just want you to know that if you want liability insurance, you will have to find a place to get it.”

Caton told county administrator Connie Powell to research the issue and see what options the county had regarding the facility.

•Heard from a resident who lives on County Road 174 regarding overgrown trees near the road. The resident told commissioners the trees had not been cut in more than 25 years, and wanted the county to do something about cutting near the right-of-way.

Chilton County Assistant Engineer Matt Epperson, who was at the meeting in place of county engineer Tony Wearren, took note about the issue.

•Heard from a resident who lives on County Road 123 about an incident involving officers with the Chilton County Sheriff’s Department. Agee encouraged the resident to seek legal advice on the situation.
