CIS names Young Authors’ Conference winners

Clanton Intermediate School announced its 2014 Young Authors’ Conference winners Friday.
Judges not affiliated with CIS chose entries for first-, second- and third-place awards in Best Story and Best Illustrations categories for third–fifth grades.
The following students received awards:
Fifth grade, best story
•Laken Flowers, first place for “A Simple Book: A Book of Poetry”
•Raven Baker, second place for “Adoption”
•Jasmine Stone, third place for “What Inspired Me to Do Gymnastics”
Fifth grade, best illustrations
•Laken Flowers, first place for “A Simple Book: A Book of Poetry”
•Raven Baker, second place for “Adoption”
•Emily Williams, third place for “Off to the Amazon”
Fourth grade, best story
•Cameron McGhar, first place for “The Christmas Egg”
•Halle Sullivan, second place for “Our 4th Grade Fight”
•Jonathan Alford, third place for “Cat Food? Nope! Puppies”
Fourth grade, best illustrations
•Charlotte Blencowe, first place for “The Technology Girl”
•Anna Cleckler, second place for “Andrew the Ant Take a Vacation”
•Ivan Marquez, third place for “Bat-Man”
Third grade, best story
•Garret Traywick, first place for “The Two Scientists”
•Lilly Griffin, second place for “Fun Times with My Grandparents”
•Lydia Newton, third place for “Does the Mustache Say No?”
Third grade, best illustrations
•Cayleigh Averhart, first place for “A Girl’s Best Friend”
•Rickey Edwards, second place for “The Zoo”
•Morgan Wright, third place for “Having a Best Friend”
On Friday, students were treated to programs by author and artist Chris Rumble and children’s author Ronda Friend.
Students also had the opportunity to purchase books from the authors.
“We’re proud of all of them,” CIS Principal David Seale said of this year’s award winners. “It’s a big deal.”
With assistance from CIS librarian Donna McCary and other staff members, the annual Young Authors’ Conference is organized and funded by the CIS Parent Teacher Organization.
“A lot of PTO fundraisers go to this,” Seale said.
