Scruggs, Messer wed

Against a background of white-lighted Christmas trees, Miss Brentley Noelle Scruggs and Mr. Richard Clay Messer were united in marriage, Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at First Baptist Church in Clanton.

Mrs. Kathy Elder, organist; Mr. Gilchrist Karn, pianist; and Mr. Nathan Hudson, saxophonist, provided the music for the ceremony.

The officiating pastor was Mr. Scott Springer. The chiming of the hour was by Miss Anna Kathryn Hallford, cousin of the bride, of Fairhope.

Parents of the bride are Mr. and Mrs. Ray Brent Scruggs of Clanton. Parents of the groom are Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Lee Messer of Beauregard. Grandparents of the bride are Mr. and Mrs. Ray L. Scruggs of Clanton, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Robinson of Jemison. Grandparents of the groom are Mr. and Mrs. George E. Bissonette of Beauregard.

The bride was escorted down the aisle by her father and given in marriage by her parents. She was lovely in an ivory lace trumpet gown with a strapless bodice and sweetheart neckline. The fitted gown was pleated lace with jeweled appliqués at the waist and knee. The lace skirt flared to a chapel length train. Completing her ensemble was a chapel length veil of illusion, which had a circular knee length blusher with a hand-cut edge. The bride’s bouquet was a combination of white garden roses and baby’s breath tied with fabric from her late grandmother’s wedding dress and pearls worn by her late great-grandmother.

The matron of honor was Mrs. Bethany Bice McClure, cousin of the bride, of Atlanta, Ga. The maid of honor was Mrs. Elizabeth Creekmore of Dothan.

Bridesmaids were Miss Kelli Michelle Crumpton of Clanton; Miss Meagan Ann Dinwiddie of Huntsville; Mrs. Kristin Ann Halbert of Atlanta, Ga.; Miss Chelsea Danielle Messer, sister of the groom, of Beauregard; and Mrs. Jessica Adams Peed of Spanish Fort. The attendants wore long black off-shoulder dresses and carried small arrangements of baby’s breath tied with a silk black ribbon.

Mr. Melvin Lee Messer, father of the groom, of Beauregard, served as his son’s best man. Groomsmen were Mr. James Whitney Danzey of Beauregard; Mr. Jonathan Scott Gatlin of Foley; Mr. Samuel James Rotchell of Elkmont; Mr. Ray Brittan-Taft Scruggs, brother of the bride, of Clanton; Mr. Kenneth Shane Ford of Beauregard; and Mr. Christopher Frank McGraw of Auburn.

Ring bearer was Master John Charles Ostertag of Northview, Mich.; and flower girls were Miss Addison Jewel Ostertag of Northview, Mich., and Miss Sarah Elise McClure of Atlanta, Ga.

A scripture reading from 1 Corinthians 13 was read by Miss Shayna Jo Robinson and Miss Shelbie Lee Robinson, cousins of the bride, of Jemison.

A candlelight reception was held at The Marriott Legends at Capital Hill in Prattville.

The tables were beautifully decorated with baby’s breath flowers in tall crystal vases. The music was provided by The Fountain City Players as the guests enjoyed a delicious buffet. The bride’s and groom’s cakes were made and created by Mrs. Emily Lett from Indulge Sweet Shoppe in Clanton. Miss Jackie Frontiero was the event planner and designer from Dana’s Floral Design and Weddings in Prattville.

The bride graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. She is employed as a kindergarten teacher at Richland Elementary School in Auburn.

The groom graduated from Auburn University with a degree in bio-systems engineering and a master’s degree in civil engineering. He is employed as an engineer with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management in Montgomery.

After a honeymoon trip to Cancun, Mexico, the couple resides in Auburn.
