County votes to give sheriff money for vehicles

In other news, the commission:
•Met in executive session for more than 30 minutes for a pending legal matter at the request of Jackson. Jackson told commissioners there was a legal matter concerning Chilton County E-911 and he requested Chilton County E-911 Director Dan Wright be present.
•Declared an emergency at the Chilton County Courthouse due to lack of heat in the building. Caton said he accepted an invoice from Active Air Inc. to start working on the heat.
“We got other prices but Active Air was a local company and they could drop what they were doing and come down here,” Caton said.
Caton said commissioners needed to approve the invoice and pass a resolution declaring it to be an emergency.
Hayes made the motion with Welch seconding it. Caton said the heat should be fixed by Wednesday.
•Discussed creating a salary for the new position of revenue commissioner with the county. Caton said qualifying fees are 2-percent for whatever the salary of the revenue commissioner is and the commission needed to decide soon.
Jackson said the job description was covered in the local act and according to the act, the salary could not be less than $50,000. Agee said he would like to see what other counties do to be competitive with them.
Caton asked county administrator Connie Powell to get the information through the Association of County Commissions of Alabama and report back to the commission at a future meeting.
•Voted to change part of County Road 15 from a minor collector to a major collector. County engineer Tony Wearren told commissioners County Road 15 with the exception of 1.5 miles is a major collector and he needed the rest of the road to be changed to a major collector.
•Passed a resolution to nominate Richard Weisner to the Chilton-Clanton Library Board.
•Passed a resolution for nominations to the Chilton County Solid Waste Authority.
Nominations made during Monday’s meeting included those of current board members which are Maplesville Mayor W.C. Hayes, Clanton Mayor Billy Joe Driver, Jemison City Councilman George Brasher, Thorsby Mayor Jean Nelson, Joe Jackson, Allen Payton and Rose Landrum.
Other nominations included Jeff Mims, Sharon Pledger and Ray Hardesty. Agee nominated D.J. Nix and Welch nominated Caton and Hayes.
Everyone voted in favor to accept the nominations and will vote to approve the nominations at the Dec. 9 commission meeting.
•Passed a resolution to approve Connell Pest Control for pest control at Higgins Ferry Park.
Everyone voted in favor.
•Heard from Jackson who spoke at the end of the meeting about former commissioner Tim Mims who passed away Nov. 14.
“When Tim passed away I was out of state at a meeting,” Jackson said. “I worked with him for a long time. You can judge someone in my book by the way they work with you. Tim was tops. He was elected as a Democrat, an Independent and a Republican and no other commissioner in this county can say that. Tim was my friend and I will miss him.”
Caton asked commissioners to consider doing something special to remember Mims.
“Be thinking about something we can do and we will talk about it at a later date,” Caton said. “Tim will be missed.”
