Walter Rayford Enfinger

Walter Rayford Enfinger, 96, of Clanton, died peacefully at his home on Nov. 23.

A native of Geneva County, he moved to Clanton after attending high school in Georgiana.

Shortly after moving to Clanton he met his future wife, Myrtice Eugenia Mims, while attending church at Walnut Creek Methodist Church where his father was the pastor.

Enfinger served his county in World War II by serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps (now USAF) at bases in Florida, Mississippi and Colorado.

After serving in the military he returned to Clanton and was hired at Chicago Sales Company where he later became part owner until his retirement. He was a faithful and dedicated member of Walnut Creek United Methodist Church.

He was always known for his kind heart and willingness to assist anyone in need.

Enfinger was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. J.W. Enfinger and Nancy Spikes Enfinger and all of his seven siblings, Bertha Enfinger Kelly, Myrtle Enfinger Mathis, Madrue Enfinger Stuart, Hazel Enfinger Driggars, Raymond Enfinger, A.D. Mack Enfinger and one infant.

He is survived by his loving wife of more than 70 years, Myrtice Mims Enfinger; a son, Russell Enfinger Sr. (Sally) of Panama City, Fla.; a daughter, Sara Enfinger Baker McPherson (Mark) of Birmingham; four grandchildren, Dr. Chris Baker (Melissa); Dr. Bethany Baker Lyn of Clanton; Rusy Enfinger Jr. of Panama City and Sara Elizabeth “Lyza” Enfinger Specht (Will) of Ruston, La.; six great-grandchildren, Chase and Ryan Baker, Nicholas and Julianne Lyn of Clanton and Samuel and Cooper Specht of Ruston; and many special nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. at Walnut Creek United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tony Hughes officiating. The family received friends and visitors one hour prior to the service at the church. A private family interment will follow at Martin Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Walnut Creek United Methodist Church building fund or the United Methodist children’s homes.
