Men’s spotlight

Javae Swindle (Jemison 2012) contributed an epic performance at running back with 171 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries for West Alabama (2-1) in a 45-3 triumph at Florida Tech (1-2) on Sept. 21 in Melbourne, Fla.

Only 27 seconds into the contest, the sophomore introduced himself to the end zone on a 76-burst on the second play of the Tigers’ first possession for a 7-0 lead.

Momentum did not slow for UWA, who cruised to a 28-3 lead by halftime.

Swindle added his second score at the 1:28 mark of the third quarter on a two-yard scamper to cap an 18-play, 98-yard drive.

For the season, Swindle is the Tigers’ leading rusher with 340 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries for an 11.3 yards-per-carry average.

Women’s spotlight

Kasi Wells (Jemison 2011) tallied 16 assists, five digs and one kill for Cumberland (9-7) at home in a 3-0 sweep of Fisk (3-6) at the Volleydawg Classic on Sept. 21 in Lebanon, Tenn.

For the season, the junior has participated in 59 sets to contribute a team-high 342 assists, 97 digs, 36 kills, 12 aces and 12 blocks.

Football

Anthony Johnson (Maplesville 2013) posted 59 yards on two receptions for Jacksonville State (4-0) in a 32-26 victory in overtime at Georgia State (0-4) on Sept. 21 in Atlanta.

The biggest play for the 6-foot-4, 200-pound freshman tight end came on a 50-yard completion from Max Shortell that ended one yard shy of a touchdown early in the second quarter.

Running back DaMarcus James punched it in for a score on the following play to cap a nine-play, 90-yard drive at the 9:22 mark for a 13-9 JSU lead.

In overtime, GSU failed to score on their opening possession after 42-yard field goal sailed wide and JSU followed with a six-play, 25-yard drive that ended with a two-yard score from James for his third TD run of the game.

Jacoby Browder II (Pratville 2010) recorded two tackles as a starting defensive back for No. 17 Tuskegee (2-1) in a 35-13 loss against No. 19 Winston-Salem State (2-1) at the Cleveland Classic on Sept. 21 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The 5-8, 185-pound senior is a Verbena native.

Both teams were ranked among the NCAA Div. II Top 25 by the American Football Coaches Association poll released on Sept. 16.

Taylor Hughes (Chilton County 2010) capped a 10-play, 99-yard drive with a game-winning 11-yard TD pass to Taylor Belsterling with 1:18 remaining in regulation en route to leading Huntingdon College (2-0) to a 34-27 triumph at home against Louisiana College (2-0) on Sept. 21 in Montgomery.

The senior finished the contest 10-of-14 passing for 139 yards and two scores.

Blake Lawley (Isabella 2010) nabbed four tackles as a starting defensive end for Huntingdon against Louisiana College.

Austin Rossi (Chilton County 2013) contributed one tackle as a linebacker for Birmingham-Southern (3-0) in a 49-34 victory at Stetson (1-2) on Sept. 21 in DeLand, Fla.

Volleyball

Amber Wyatt (Isabella 2011) posted a team-high four blocks and two kills for South Alabama (5-5) in a 3-0 victory at Jackson State (1-11) on Sept. 17 in Jackson, Miss.

For the season, the junior has participated in six matches and contributed 10 blocks, nine kills and six digs.

Allison Mims (Isabella 2013) participated in one set for Wallace Community College Selma (6-5) in a 3-0 loss at Snead State Community College (5-11) on Sept. 16 in Boaz.

For the season, the freshman has participated in seven matches to total 12 aces, nine digs and five kills.
