The Jemison Police Department will host a Citizens Firearm Safety Class Aug. 3 at 8 a.m.

This will be the first year the JPD will host the class designed to familiarize those who might own a handgun with the proper techniques to use them.

Jemison Deputy Chief Marc McMinn said he decided to organize a class after meeting individuals who owned handguns but didn’t know basic things such as how to properly load the guns.

“This class will cover the basics of firearm safety and allow everyone participating to familiarize themselves with safety operations,” McMinn said. “We will start out the class by going over different things and then we will take everyone to the shooting range and let them practice shooting.”

Participants for the class must possess a valid pistol permit and have their own gun and ammunition and safety glasses.

The city of Jemison will provide all targets and hearing protection.

McMinn said JPD is partnering with Thorsby Police Department who will allow participants in the class to use the firing range in Thorsby.

“We are excited and think this will be beneficial to everyone living in this county,” McMinn said.

Training will start at 8 a.m. and last until noon.

Those interested in the class must register by calling McMinn, at (205) 688-4491 ext. 314 or by email at mmcminn@jemisonpd.org to register for the class and directions to the range.

There is no cost for the class.
