The Clanton City Council on Monday approved an architectural bid for the installation of four storm shelters in the city.

Barry Davis’ bid was the only one received and was accepted, though it included no total amount to be paid for the services. The council approved the bid with the stipulation that it be less than $38,000.

If the bid is more than $38,000, the council could either decided to pay the difference itself or seek more bids.

The shelters would be located near Clanton City Park and the Enterprise, Lomax and West End communities. Exact locations of the shelters haven’t been decided yet.

The council also approved at its regular meeting Monday to enter a $14,000 contract with Louise Campbell for grant writing services related to the shelter projects.

In other business, the council:

•Approved the promotion of Clanton Police Department officer Ronald Giles to corporal.

•Discussed a recommendation from councilmember Jeff Price that the city explore re-paving the track at Clanton City Park. “It’s in pretty rough shape in spots,” Price said, and other councilmembers agreed. Councilmember Mary Mell Smith said the city should also consider re-paving the track at Goose Pond Park.

•Heard from Ryan Welch, vice-president with Cauthen, Forbes and Williams who works with Central Alabama Electric Cooperative, about his willingness to help the council should the need arise.
