Chilton County Fair organizers reported record attendance Tuesday night.
The exact numbers were not available Wednesday, but Clanton Kiwanis Club President Dan Nolen said more people came through the gates Tuesday than nearly every other night since the club took over the fair about eight years ago.
“We did break a record [Tuesday] night for one-night attendance,” Nolen said. “There was the biggest traffic jam we’ve ever had.”
The Stoney Roberts Demolition Derby, a mainstay event for the fair each year, drew one of its largest crowds Tuesday, and a motorcycle and bicycle show captured people’s attention Monday.
Chris Baker of Clanton won the Mechanics Award, along with driver Brandon Baker of Clanton.
In the Best Appearance category, Tyler Boggs of Clanton was the crowd’s choice, and Cameron Ellison of Clanton was the officials’ choice.
Feature runner-up was Allen Davenport of Clanton, and Boggs was Feature winner.
In Heat 1 (4-cylinder), winners were Alaina Lovelady and Michael Abbott, both of Maplesville.
In Heat 2 (6-cylinder), winners were Brandon Baker of Clanton and Jeremy S. Morris of Maplesville.
In Heat 3 (8-cylinder), winners were Eric Beard of Dora and Henry Gibson of Clanton.
In Heat 4 (mini truck), winners were Ellison and William Lovelady of Maplesville. On the Edge 2-Wheel Action Shows will entertain fairgoers again Saturday night.
“We’re looking forward to them coming back,” Nolen said.
According to Nolen, Friday is usually the fair’s busiest night, but he and fellow organizers are ready for the rush to continue.
“It sure takes a lot of help to make this run smooth,” Nolen said. “It’s been wonderful—best we’ve ever had.”
Gates open at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and at 5 p.m. Saturday.
