Heavy rains bring more humidity

Parts of Chilton County received as many as 3 inches of rain during thunderstorms that started moving in early Tuesday morning.

The rains continued to soak saturated roads until about noon, according to meteorologist Michael Garrison of the National Weather Service in Calera.

“The heavy rain is pretty much done with,” Garrison said, noting spots of light rain in the southern part of the county. “We had some widespread 3-inch totals around the county.”

Garrison said Tuesday afternoon temperatures were expected to reach the mid- to upper 80s, accompanied by a large amount of humidity because of the rains.

For the next few days, temperatures will return to the 90s, with a 30-percent chance of rain each day.

“I think the heat and humidity may be the bigger story the next few days,” Garrison said. “It’s going to feel sort of rough, I imagine.”

Garrison advised everyone to take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

“Anytime you get up there and the heat index is 100 degrees, you’ve got to figure out how to stay cool,” he said. “People outside have got to make sure they are hydrated very well. Watch out for symptoms of heat stroke or heat illnesses.”

Garrison recommended drinking plenty of water, taking frequent breaks from working outside and finding a cool place to stay.
