Famous name coming to old theater

Clanton landmark: The Wadesonian Theater is the current home of Fellowship Church of God.

The old Wadesonian Theater soon might find itself as a center of Clanton activity again.

The venue became a city landmark upon its construction in the early 20th century, but for the past 30 years or so has been forgotten except for a small church congregation that meets there weekly.

But Junior Deloach said he thinks the theater is the perfect location to host gospel singings.

“We’ve been having singings at the courthouse auditorium, and it holds 150-175 people,” Deloach said. “We can get 400-450 [at the theater]. And it has been remodeled. It’s really nice.”

A grand opening is planned for 7 p.m. on May 26 with a singing featuring the Deloach Family and others.

Admission will be free, and door prizes will be given away, including a grand prize of cash.

The Wadesonian Theater sits off Second Avenue North in downtown Clanton. It is the current home of Fellowship Church of God, and Deloach said the singings will provide money for the church.

Gospel music fans might also be excited to know that Deloach plans to bring a famous name to the Wadesonian: Joanne Cash, sister of famous music star Johnny Cash.

“She sings all gospel,” Deloach said. “She’s doing this because it’s a church. Everybody we’ve talked to about it is thrilled.”

Cash is planned to make an appearance at the Wadesonian on June 23. Tickets will be sold for $10 each.

“I believe it will sell out in a week,” Deloach said.

Apart from reviving a Clanton tradition, Deloach said he thinks the singings at the Wadesonian could benefit many people in the community.

“We’ve got so many people in Chilton County that want to sing, and they’re good, but no one wants to give them a chance,” he said. “Well, we’re going to give them a place to sing.”
